Website or app: what does your business need first?

How to decide between a website, an app or both, based on how your customers buy.

Many business owners ask me for an app when what they need first is a good website, and some do the opposite. Here's a simple way to decide.

Start with how your customers find you

New customers usually find a business through Google, Instagram or a friend's link. All of those open a website. Very few people download an app from a business they've never bought from. So if your main goal is getting new customers, a website comes first.

An app makes sense when customers come back often

Apps shine when the same people buy again and again: groceries, fashion, food, salons, gyms, classes. An app sits on their home screen, can send offers by notification, and makes reordering quick. So Glamy's shopping app works because customers return to buy again.

Quick checklist

  • Website first if you need to be found on Google, you're a service business (clinic, school, agency, NGO), or customers buy rarely.
  • App next if customers buy often, you want to send offers by notification, or you need features that work best on a phone such as location or camera.
  • Both if you sell online regularly. Build the store first, then add an app that uses the same products and orders.

Don't forget the admin side

Whatever customers see, someone has to manage orders, stock and enquiries. A simple admin panel or admin app saves hours every week, and is often the most useful thing I build for a client.

My suggestion

If you're unsure, start with a fast, mobile-friendly website with WhatsApp and payments built in. Add an app once you see customers coming back. That way you spend money where it brings results first.
